Micah's Capstone Project, 2025

The hell is this?

In the early months of 2025, I decided to commit myself to a writing project about the psychology of motorism. Titled Stories from Behind the Steering Wheel, it was meant to be an exploration into the complicated feelings that many Americans have about their cars--after all, the highways are what made America feel, well, American to me.

By March, the project was going nowhere, fast. I had loose threads, little observations, single-sentence theses, but I couldn't stitch it all together into a project. I briefly considered writing about relationship OCD, Hadestown, the conditions of love, and trust, but I quickly ran out of steam when I discovered that the Broadway piracy community is unhinged. (This is the only community I've seen where you're expected to pay for bootlegs.)

Meanwhile, I felt like "my" country (The United States of America) was falling apart. I probably couldn't shake that feeling because I stay up to date with current events and because of the speed at which funding in my field (psychology, public health, the gay agenda, etc.) was being cut. It was time to find a new place to call home.

What better place than the internet? (Well, there are many better places, but this one is mine.)

In the spirit of game jams, I'll be doing a web development jam, where I'll challenge myself to make the rest of this website in the span of 72 hours. I'll be jamming with a friend, since she's working on a Pokemon ROM hack, which is also her first foray into web/game design. We're both new developers, so I'm calling it the NewlyDevs Jam.

Under the 'NewlyDevs Jam' page, I'll set the schedule for the Jam, post the resources I'm using for learning, and probably vent my frustrations with learning a new skill. 'Thoughts on Netizenship' will be my actual project--probably an autobiography of growing up on the internet, along with results for the survey I made y'all take (thanks for doing so!).

See you after the jam!
